Who knew something as simple as doing your nails could become so complicated? In the salon world, we have so many choices – Acrylic, Gel, Builder Gel, Polygel and more. Then there are the brand-specific options, stick-ons, press-ons, tips and again the list goes on.
In the nail wrap world, it’s a little easier. Basically, there are gel wraps and polish wraps. The difference and which one works for you depends on a few factors. But here are some guidelines to help you narrow down which will be a winner for you.
Essentially they look the same, but they function very differently, so let’s see what they each bring to the DIY manicure table:
WHAT ARE NAIL WRAPS?
Gel Nail and Polish Nails are both wraps and are almost identical in the following way:
- Both come in strips of nail-shaped wraps.
Depending on the brand you may get anything from 16 to 32 wraps on a single strip. There will also be multiple sizes. - Each nail wrap has a sticky adhesive at its base.
This is a medical-grade adhesive that will stick to your natural nail. So it may seem like a regular sticker, but the adhesive is far stronger. - The wraps come in many colours and designs.
You could get a set with a single solid colour, multiple colours in one set or multiple designs in a single set. - The wraps are flexible.
This means that you can place them and press them onto your natural nail shape. Making them very versatile and customisable.
They are applied and removed in the same manner, but here are the key differences:
GEL NAIL WRAPS
In the salons, they would apply a base coat, then a colour and any designs you might have requested. This is all finished off with a top coat. At each level, you would cure the gel under a lamp. The gel used here will either come from a small tub or a bottle that looks like a nail polish bottle and it would be in a semi to full liqued state.
The salon would not be able to extend your nails, but rather work with your existing nails.
Gel nail wraps also have a base coat, colour and or design then a top coat, but instead of completely curing them, they are cured to around 60%. What this does is keep them pliable, yet firm enough to keep their shape and be placed onto your nail.
Then once you are happy with the placement you finish the curing process with your lamp.
Application Process
Once you receive your semi-cured gel nails the application process will be on every box you purchase, there’s also videos to watch, but the best is to just dive in and give it a try. These are the basic steps to get you started:
- Prepare Your Nails: Start by cleaning your nails, pushing back cuticles, and lightly buffing the nail surface.
- Select and Apply Wraps: Choose the wrap size that best fits your nails. Peel off the backing and apply the wrap, pressing it down firmly from the cuticle to the tip.
- Trim and File: Trim the excess wrap and file it down to match the shape of your nail.
- Cure: Use a UV/LED lamp to cure the wraps for the recommended time (usually around 60 seconds).
- Finished: At this point you are good to go, however you can apply a gel top coat if desired and cure again for added shine and durability.
- NOTE: Avoid washing your hands or emersing your hands in water for at least an hour or two after application. This will give the adhesive enough time to settle and adhere properly.
Benefits
Long-Lasting: With proper application and care, they can last anywhere between two to four weeks without lifting or chipping.
Professional Finish: They offer a glossy, salon-quality look.
Durable: Resistant to chips and cracks.
Considerations
Curing Lamp Required: You need a UV/LED lamp to cure the wraps.
Removal: The adhesive is fairly strong and can leave a sticky residue that can be easily cleaned off.
First applications always take a bit longer. You will need to figure out what sizes work for your nails and get comfortable with positioning them. But the learning curve is quick.
NAIL POLISH WRAPS
Nail polish wraps are adhesive strips made from real nail polish. They are fully dry and ready to apply directly from the package – essentially, they are instant nail polish.
Application Process
- Prepare Your Nails: Clean your nails, push back cuticles, and lightly buff the nail surface if needed.
- Select and Apply Wraps: Choose the wrap size that best fits your nails. Peel off the backing and apply the wrap, pressing it down firmly from the cuticle to the tip.
- Trim and File: Trim the excess wrap and file it down to match the shape of your nail.
- Optional: Add a top coat of clearn nail varnish or gel top coat that will need to be cured for 60 seconds. The top coat will help your polish wraps last at least 2 weeks.
- NOTE: Avoid washing your hands or emersing your hands in water for at least an hour or two after application. This will give the adhesive enough time to settle and adhere properly.
Benefits
No Drying Time: Since they are already dry, there is no waiting for polish to dry.
Easy Application: Quick and straightforward to apply, without any additional tools.
Variety: Available in many designs and finishes, from matte to glitter.
Considerations
Durability: Typically lasts 3 – 5 days before showing signs of wear, this can be prolonged by adding a top coat.
No Curing Lamp Needed: Can be applied anywhere without needing extra equipment.
Removal: Easily removed by soaking your hands in warm soapy water and gently lifting the polish wrap. The adhesive is also lighter and easier to remove than the gel wraps.
WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
Choosing between semi-cured gel nail wraps and nail polish wraps depends on your lifestyle and preferences:
Semi-Cured Gel Nail Wraps
If you prefer a longer-lasting, professional-looking manicure then Semi-Cured Gel Nail Wraps are the way to go.
They are thicker and provide a durable, glossy finish that can withstand daily activities without chipping.
While they cannot be used to extend the nail length they do provide some support and strength to your nails, making them ideal for those with thinner nails or those trying to grow them out.
Nail Polish Wraps
If you need a quick, no-fuss solution then Nail Polish Wraps are perfect.
They are easy to apply and remove, making them ideal for those who want a fast and convenient manicure option.
Without a top coat of clear nail varnish or gel top coat they are a short term solution. With the top coat they can last well over 2 weeks.
They are also a great low commitment option to put over existing gel, acrylic or any other nail enhancement if you are inbetween salon appointments. As they are so easily removed you can have a pop of fun with a new colour or style without having to wait for the next appointment.
Both types of wraps offer a fantastic way to achieve beautiful nails without the hassle of traditional nail polish or an expensive salon visit. Whether you’re a busy professional, a DIY enthusiast, or someone who loves to experiment with nail art, there’s a wrap out there for you.
