Let’s be real: stress is part of life, and it’s not going anywhere. Whether it’s juggling work deadlines, family commitments, or that endless to-do list, we all know that feeling of being pulled in a million directions. But here’s the thing—stress isn’t the enemy. In fact, a little bit of it can keep us on our toes and motivate us to tackle our daily challenges. The trick is finding those small moments to pause, breathe, and recenter ourselves amid the chaos.
At this point you must be thinking, uh-uh Dawn, what’s an article on stress got to do with nail wraps?
Well, as much as I would love to say that using nail wraps is a tried and tested go-to stress busting product, I cannot, because it isn’t. The product is not stress busting, but the process of applying it and the act of taking care of yourself, well that’s where the magic happens.
STRESS & ITS EFFECTS
Whether it’s that little voice in your head reminding you of deadlines, the chaos of family life, or the mountain of chores waiting at home, stress can present in every part of our lives. There’s a very real downside to sustained and high levels of stress – like burnout, anxiety, and health issues. But do we need to eradicate it completely?
A sprinkle of stress can actually be a good thing. It can spark motivation, push us to meet deadlines, and even help us grow. Even a happy event carries a level of stress or anxiety with it which can add to excitement and a higher level of enjoyment.
So rather than waiting until we have too much to deal with and then we have to try manage all the ‘side effects’ like physical tension, racing thoughts, or a short temper.
Here’s the deal: we can’t eliminate stress, but we can take steps to manage how it affects us. Instead of trying to escape it, we can rather embrace small moments that allow us to breathe and reflect. This is where those little acts of self-care come into play.
The point is to be intentional and realistic about managing your stress. Making big lists of all the self-care things you’re ‘SUPPOSED’ to be doing can also defeat the entire purpose.
To illustrate how you can create a simple calm, low effort moment of calm, let’s use nail care as an example.
SET THE STAGE
Find the Time
Not every nail application needs to be a zen a moment and nail wraps are so easy to apply, you’re probably doing them while watching a show or listening to a podcast. But now is not the time to be multi tasking, unless that’s what gets you Zen, then by all means, multi task away.
But finding the right time can go a long way in making this a chill out time. You don’t need hours, 20 or 30 minutes could be all you need.
Set the Mood
Depending on the level of stress you’re dealing with and your personal preference you may want to begin with setting the mood. Do and use whatever works for you. You might want to burn bit of sage (or setting the entire bush alight), others might prefer pouring a glass of wine (or the entire bottle, although results may vary in this instance), this is your moment and you get to choose.
You don’t need a special spa set up, the goal is simply to create an environment or mood that you feel comfortable and relaxed in.
Prep your Gear
The worst thing to happen is being halfway through your chill out application process and then you realise you dont have something and have to go rummaging around the house to find it. Consider the moment officially over. Rather over prep than under prep. Get your files, creams, swabs, playlist… all the things and make sure they are easily accessible.
MAKE IT MINDFUL
The internet is saturated with mindful prompts, promises and affirmations. They are mostly great but can easily be drowned out by the noise of life. Getting into the zone and committing to just 20 minutes of being present is fairly achievable, with the added bonus of having gorgeous nails at the end. Here are some hints on how to make your nail wrap session a little more mindful.
Focus on the Task at Hand
It’s easy to let your mind wander when you are busy with a fairly easy task. Try not let your mind wander to your endless to do list or the washing piling up in the next room. A great way to keep yourself in the moment is to focus on your senses. This means taking note of the smells, colours, textures, sounds and textures of what you are working with.
Breathing and Reflecting
You have a minimum of 60 seconds per hand that you need to cure your gel wraps, why not use that time to do a breathing exercise or set an intention. As you work, take deep breaths and as you slowly exhale, begin to release the tension from your jaw, shoulders and back.
Affirm to yourself that you deserve the time you are taking and that you are worth it… because you are!
Enjoy the Process
Okay, so maybe breathing and talking to yourself seems a bit much, at the very least you can try to have a little fun and enjoy the process. Take a little satisfaction in seeing how good your nails look or how long they have grown. Just that small practice of experiencing a little joy can be incredibly grounding.
GRATITUDE & APPRECIATION
So the nails are done, you did the breathing and the relaxing, it’s time to finish big. Before you change modes and get into tidying up and putting everything away, this simply would not be a zen experience without taking these last few steps.
Take a Moment to Appreciate
Pause and appreciate. You now have a gorgeous new set of nail wraps, and you had some me time. It may seem small – but it is an accomplishment.
Capture the Moment
Consider taking a quick photo. Whether you share it or not is irrelevant. You have created a memory and have a tangible result that you can document.
Reflect on the Experience
Sure – it’s just putting a new set of nails wraps on, but are you feeling a little calmer, maybe feel like you accomplished something. Dare I say it – are you a little proud. We are allowed to feel a little pride when we do things well. Just like stress, it’s not all bad.
Nail wraps are why you and I are connecting across the vast interwebs, but the principles behind this can be applied to almost anything – whether it’s cooking dinner or doing a seasonal spring clean.
In a world that often feels chaotic, finding those small moments of calm can make all the difference. Your nail care ritual can be more than just a beauty routine; it’s a chance to step back, breathe, and prioritize yourself, even if only for a little while.
By setting the stage, embracing mindfulness, and celebrating your results, you transform a simple task into a fulfilling self-care experience. So the next time you find yourself overwhelmed, remember that even a few minutes spent on your nails can be a moment of zen amidst the hustle and bustle of life.
Here’s to making self-care a priority, one nail wrap at a time. You’ve got this!
